Learning About Gemstone Sizes If you know the carat weight of a gemstone, do you know its exact size? Not necessarily. Densities, or mass per unit volume, differ in various gemstones. That’s why two gemstones may appear to be the same size but weigh different amounts. For instance, a diamond is not as dense as a ruby, yet a 1-carat diamond will look larger than a 1-carat ruby. Knowing the diameter of round gemstones, and length and width for other shapes, can help you envision what a stone looks like. Ask for a gemstone’s dimensions so that you can be sure most of the stone’s weight will be seen when put in a setting.
