Soothing Yellow Gemstones
Throughout history, yellow was associated with the sun and precious gold. Because of this association, yellow is often representative of knowledge, generosity, cheerfulness and divinity.
Similar to red, yellow in its pure form is an energetic, warm color. It’s said to be the color most easily spotted at a distance, which is why school buses, taxicabs and some emergency vehicles are painted yellow. Yellow is also thought to assist concentration, and is one reason sticky notes and legal pads were originally yellow.
Around the globe, the meanings attributed to yellow are similar. Ancient Asian cultures considered yellow to be the color of joy, glory and wisdom. Starting in the 3rd millennium B.C., yellow was associated with power and authority in China where the Emperor and Buddhist monks wore saffron-yellow dyed robes. Also in China, the color yellow is assigned to the active and creative male Yang principle. Ancient Egyptians ascribed feminine attributes to yellow based on its gentleness, cheerfulness and sensuality.
Yellow in Fashion
Lovers of yellow tend to be outgoing and have inquiring minds. They have a sunny disposition and adore activity. Creative and artistic, they also have an analytical side and lean toward a perfectionist nature. Bright splashes of yellow are sure to gain attention especially as an accent for cooler colored fashions such as blue and light green. Softer yellows offer a soothing, contemplative option that enhances pastel attire.
Brighter, mineralized yellows look great in ethnic and nature-inspired designs. Gems like Precious Topaz, Honey-hued Tiger’s Eye, Citrine, Yellow Diamond and darker shades of Yellow Sapphire, are great choices for these design styles. Chatham Created Yellow Sapphire is an option if you want the brilliance of Sapphire but are concerned about its price.
Dusty, soft yellows will be popular in Victorian and romantic design styles. Pastel Yellow Sapphire and lighter shades of Yellow Diamond as well as Champagne Diffused Topaz are the perfect complements to these creations. Lemon Quartz or Lemon Citrine, a gem with rising popularity, also looks great in vintage fashions.
Keep in mind that these are not hard and fast rules, just ideas to spark your own creativity and help you think of color first when buying gemstones and gemstone jewelry.
